Kerala Goes Hydrogen: ANERT Invites Biomass Pilot Projects

by | Jan 24, 2026 | News | 0 comments

Kerala has taken a major step toward clean energy as the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT) has invited proposals for pilot projects that can produce green hydrogen from biomass. ANERT, which works under the State Department of Power, is leading the effort as the nodal agency for the Kerala Green Hydrogen Mission. The goal is to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen technologies that can support industries and benefit the environment.

ANERT is looking for project ideas that use biomass as the main resource to generate green hydrogen. Only those proposals will be accepted where the technology is already tested at an advanced stage (Technology Readiness Level 5 or 6). Early research or basic lab-level ideas will not qualify because the state wants projects that can be deployed on the ground quickly and scaled up later.

The state has allocated a funding pool of ₹30 crores for these projects. Out of this, ₹25 crores will come from the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, and ₹5 crores will be provided by ANERT. ANERT’s funding will support operational costs, but it is limited to either 20% of the total project cost or ₹5 crores, whichever is lower. Developers must set up and run the pilot plant for at least five years and commission it within 12 months of receiving the approval letter.

The Expression of Interest (EOI) notification was issued on January 9, 2026, and the last date to apply is January 23, 2026. Proposals have to be sent as a PDF to gh2cell@anert.in. There’s no Earnest Money Deposit required. However, if you apply under the broader funding program, you will need to provide a Performance Bank Guarantee of 20% of the approved grant amount.

Once selected, developers must give progress updates every two months during the trial run and monthly afterward. ANERT will give preference to proposals that already have buyers or offtakers for the hydrogen produced, ensuring the output does not go to waste. With this, Kerala aims to create a strong green hydrogen ecosystem using local biomass resources.
