After Lenovo successfully launched its solar-powered PC, Infinix is stepping into the spotlight with something smaller but just as exciting—a smartphone that charges itself using sunlight. At this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the company introduced two concept devices: a solar-powered phone and a color-changing E Ink phone. Both are still in the experimental phase, but they give a glimpse of what the future might hold.
The star of Infinix’s showcase is a phone with a built-in solar panel on its back. Instead of relying on traditional silicon panels, the device uses perovskite solar cells, which are thinner and cheaper to produce. To keep things running efficiently, the phone also includes Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), a system that optimizes power flow while keeping the device from overheating under direct sunlight. Right now, it can generate up to 2W of power—not enough to fully charge the phone, but enough to extend battery life when needed.
If that’s not enough, Infinix has also come up with a solar-powered phone case. This case connects to the phone through small side contacts and can provide extra power without needing a separate charging port. It’s an option that could come in handy during power outages or long outdoor trips when charging outlets aren’t available.
A Phone That Changes Color Like a Chameleon
Infinix didn’t stop at solar power. The company also showed off the second generation of its color-changing E Ink phone. The first version needed to be plugged in to shift colors, but this new model draws power from the phone’s own battery. Users can pick from preset designs or let AI match colors to their surroundings, weather, or even photos on their phone.
A Fun Experiment or the Future of Phones?
Infinix is known for pushing creative ideas, and while there’s no word on when these features might come to everyday smartphones, they show an interesting direction for mobile technology. A phone that charges in the sun and changes colors on demand? Sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, but it might not be that far away.
