India’s aviation sector is making significant steps towards sustainability, with new airports actively promoting solar energy and renewable power. Two airports standing out in this initiative are Leh’s Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport and the upcoming Navi Mumbai Airport, (operational from next month for domestic flights) each showcasing remarkable advancements in solar and renewable energy integration.

Leh’s Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport is set to become India’s first geothermal-powered airport, featuring an advanced blend of geothermal and solar energy. Its new terminal, scheduled to open in October, incorporates 457 borewells that use geothermal energy for underfloor heating, effectively eliminating carbon emissions and water use. Additionally, the airport has installed 500 KW of rooftop solar panels, with another 200 KW planned for its car park, significantly lifting its energy efficiency. This innovative approach will save about 2800 kW of energy, emphasizing Leh Airport’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Following this lead, the Navi Mumbai Airport, designed to ease congestion at Mumbai’s current facilities, represents another benchmark in sustainable aviation infrastructure. Extensive solar installations, strategically placed across rooftops and open spaces, not only meet the airport’s energy requirements but also showcase the aesthetic potential of renewable technologies. These visually appealing solar panels demonstrate that sustainability and style can coexist, complementing the airport’s modern architecture.

Both Leh and Navi Mumbai airports represent how renewable energy solutions, particularly solar power, are becoming essential elements in contemporary infrastructure. By blending aesthetic appeal with technological innovation, these airports make solar energy a sophisticated and integral feature of international aviation hubs, setting a new standard for sustainable infrastructure in India and globally.
