India is already a leader ranking 4th in renewable energy capacity globally and rising more with initiatives like Panchamrit. Green energy is focusing on creating new green job opportunities in the wind and solar sectors. India and companies here are boosting with increasing manufacturing of solar equipment. India can reach its potential value of $1 trillion by 2030.
India succeeds in climate mitigation goals and ranks 4th in total renewable energy capacity globally according to the International Renewable Energy Agency – Renewable capacity statistics 2023. The nation has also achieved 5th position in solar capacity and 4th in wind capacity all over the world.
The government is playing a significant role by implementing new initiatives from November 2023. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has approved 50 solar parks with a total capacity of 37,490 MW in 12 states of the country.
India’s domestic renewable industry is looking for reasons to boost fast. To achieve this they are searching for new strategies, one of which was set up at COP26 in 2021. India’s most known plan “Panchamrit” – A five-point plan for India’s climate action. Its measures include reaching 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, 50% of its energy requirement should be renewable energy by 2030, and reducing 1 billion tonnes of carbon emissions from now to 2030. They aim to reduce carbon intensity by 45% by 2030 and succeed in the target of net zero emissions by 2070.
The more India is going towards green change the are emerging to grow more towards green jobs to meet the increased demand. Renewable energy sectors like solar and wind energy are reaching their hikes, which demand skilled professionals to work in these industries. A report was given by CEEW-NRDC and Skill Council for Green Jobs that the renewable energy sector hired eight times more in 2021-22 than in 2020-2021. Solar and Wind energy sectors alone hired about 53,000 workers in 2021-22.
The IEA World Employment reports that in 2023 there was a rise in clean energy jobs globally. In India, the solar and wind sectors also have created job opportunities for thousands of workers in new projects in these industries.
Now to meet some of the targets of solar capacity to reach 220GW in a decade, India needs to increase its manufacturing capacity of solar photovoltaic modules. We are expecting to reach about 95GW by the year 2025.
The leading company Adani Solar aims to boost India’s solar sector in the whole world. They are building India’s first fully integrated and comprehensive solar hub in Gujarat. This project is expected to create 13,000 green jobs and currently, 2500 workers are employed in the company performing different operations.
Another major company, Tata Solar manufactures solar modules, solar cells, rooftop solar etc. The company is supplying to almost 13 states in India. The Tata company employs around 1000 workers and will continue to expand its workforce with the increase in projects.
Emmvee, the manufacturer of solar heating systems and solar panels, has reached about 3GW by the end of 2023 and is now expected to reach a capacity of 5GW in 2024. The Bangalore-based company has employed 650 workers in India.
The current scenario of the renewable industry is positive consisting of solar power capacity installed of about 82.63 GW. Renewable energy contributes 32.69%, of the total installed power capacity, amounting to a total of 144.75GW
According to a report by the Skill Council for Green Jobs, new policies and incentives are expected to boost green products. India pays attention to LiFE (Lifestyle For Environment) Mission to live a clean sustainable life. Initiatives like the Panchamrit plan and looking globally such as the International Solar Alliance can boost the country’s development. As per these reports, in upcoming years India can break the records to have a value of $1 trillion by 2030 and $15 by 2070.
