How Snowy Jammu is Quietly Turning to Solar Power, With Help From the Army

Most people imagine solar panels soaking up the sun in hot, dry deserts. But what about Jammu, a place where snow covers the land for nearly half the year? Turns out, solar power is making its way even here, and it’s the Indian Army leading the way.

Under Operation Sadbhavana and Operation Roshni, the Army recently distributed solar lamps and power banks to Gujjar and Bakarwal families living deep in the mountains of Gai and Dessa. Over 100 families received the equipment, a simple but powerful step in villages where electricity is either patchy or completely missing.

But the story doesn’t stop there.

In Ladakh’s freezing Changthang region, the Army has installed solar water heating systems in villages like Kungyam, Skidmang, Ni, Chumathang, and Kotsa Nanri. These are not towns with pipelines and modern plumbing here, even warm water is a luxury. And yet, through this effort, five units have been set up to provide just that, powered entirely by the sun.

Meanwhile, in Jaba village of Kashmir’s Kupwara district, a special project lit up homes that had never seen regular electricity. The Army partnered with Pune-based NGO Assem Foundation to bring solar power to the last mile. Dedicated to Kargil Vijay Diwas, the project also served as a tribute to Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, with his wife, Pallavi Ashutosh Sharma, attending the event.

In villages where sunset meant complete darkness, children can now study at night, and families can carry on with basic tasks after dusk. No kerosene smoke, no dependency. Just clean, steady light.

This isn’t a flashy project. No ribbon-cutting, no social media campaigns. But it’s changing lives in the coldest, most forgotten corners of the country quietly, steadily, and one solar panel at a time.
