Hydrogen is quickly becoming the center of attention as the world searches for cleaner energy solutions. With its potential to replace fossil fuels and reduce pollution, governments and companies like Adani and Ambani are betting big on this fuel of the future.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading this push in India and recently launched the country’s first Green Hydrogen Hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, India aims to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. The newly launched hub, developed by NTPC Green Energy Limited, will include renewable energy plants, a green chemical zone, and production facilities like green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel.
With an investment of ₹1.85 lakh crore, the project is expected to generate 20 GW of renewable energy and create over 57,000 jobs.
McKinsey and the International Energy Agency (IEA) reports highlight hydrogen’s growing importance.
McKinsey predicts that hydrogen could dominate new petrochemical investments globally, while the IEA sees it as key to helping countries achieve their climate goals. India’s focus on green hydrogen aligns with these global trends, positioning the country as a major player in this emerging sector.

The hub in Visakhapatnam is part of a larger strategy to make India a $2.5 trillion green economy by 2047. The project will reduce dependence on imported fuels and support net-zero emissions. PM Modi also revealed plans to set up more green hydrogen hubs to accelerate the country’s clean energy transition.
India’s petrochemical industry faces strong competition from the Middle East and China. The Middle East already has plenty of natural gas, while China leads production and consumption.
A report from ICRA highlights China’s economic slowdown, which has created excess supply, resulting in cheaper exports to Indian markets. This has put pressure on Indian manufacturers to reduce profit margins.
With bold ambitions and strategic moves, India is not just competing in the green energy race it’s gearing up to lead it.
