India’s solar industry has seen massive growth over the last decade, significantly increasing the country’s solar PV (photovoltaic) module manufacturing capacity.

According to the Ministry of Renewable Energy, India has extended its capacity from just 2.3 GW (gigawatts) to an impressive 67 GW in just ten years, because of the “Make in India” initiative.

This initiative, introduced by the Indian government, inspires local manufacturing across various sectors, including solar PV panels. With a growing demand for clean and renewable energy, India has taken huge steps to reduce its dependence on imported solar panels.

The country has focused on promoting domestic production to meet high demands, creating jobs, and improving technological advancements within the country.

“The Government is committed to making India self-reliant (Atmanirbhar) in solar PV manufacturing and establishing India as a major player in the global value chain. This commitment is demonstrated by the Rs. 24,000 crores outlay for the PLI Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules and additional policy interventions, such as the imposition of basic customs duties and domestic content requirements,” the ministry said in the statement.

The officials added, “Since 2014, India’s installed solar PV module manufacturing capacity has grown from 2.3 GW to approximately 67 GW, thanks to various measures under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This increase makes India capable of meeting domestic demand while catering to exports.

Apart from this 48 GW of fully and partially integrated PV module projects are under the solar PLI scheme, which will introduce Rs. 1.1 lakh crores investments and employment to 45000 people.
