Reliance Power to Build Bhutan’s Largest Solar Project

by | May 19, 2025 | News | 0 comments

Reliance Power has signed an agreement with Bhutan’s Green Digital Private Limited to build the country’s biggest solar plant. The project will generate 500 MW of electricity and will help Bhutan grow its clean energy capacity.

This is a 50-50 joint venture between Reliance Power and Bhutan’s main investment group, Druk Holding and Investments (DHI). The total cost of the project is ₹2,000 crore, which makes it the largest private investment in Bhutan’s solar sector so far.

The project will support both Bhutan and India. Bhutan will get more green energy, and it can also share electricity with its neighbors, including India. Reliance Power said the power will be sold through a long-term deal with Green Digital.

Reliance Power has already started looking for companies that can build the project. They will choose partners through open bidding so the work is done well and at a fair cost. The company is also in talks with banks to arrange funding.

This partnership strengthens the energy ties between India and Bhutan. It also adds to Reliance’s clean energy plan. The company already has a clean energy pipeline of 2.5 GW of solar power and more than 2.5 GWh of battery storage.

This project is not the first time the two countries have worked together. In October 2024, Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure joined hands with Bhutan’s DHI for a long-term energy partnership. That earlier deal also included a 770 MW hydroelectric project named Chamkharchhu-I, which is part of Bhutan’s national energy plan.

The new solar project shows how India and Bhutan can work together for a greener future. It also shows how private companies can play a big role in clean energy growth.
