Gudalur forest division of Tamil Nadu is on a mission to minimise human-wildlife accidents. They are installing street lights that run on solar energy to provide better visibility in areas prone to human-elephant conflict. This will help to avoid accidents caused by visibility issues.
Gudalur is a forest area; therefore, it often succumbs to human-wildlife conflict, causing the death of wildlife and humans. Recently, a man in Machikolli lost his life in an accidental encounter with an elephant.
On enquiry, the forest department learned that the accident may be caused by of lack of lighting in the forest area. Now the forest department has installed solar lights to provide more visibility at night and help pedestrians and automobilists to cross the area safely.
Similar steps have been taken in other Forest areas as well. In the Bitherkad forest area, solar lights have been installed to provide visibility on the road where an elephant attacked a man crossing a forest area. Also, in the Mullan Vayal tribal village, due to the presence of elephants, the forest officers have installed solar lights in the locality. According to the Forest Department, these steps have been taken to prevent human-animal conflict.
