Islands Turn Solar: India’s Clean Energy Vision

The 7th meeting of the Island Development Agency (IDA) in New Delhi was chaired by the Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah.

This meeting reviewed development projects in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, with a special focus on renewable energy.

Lieutenant Governor Admiral (Retd.) D K Joshi of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Praful Patel, Administrator of Lakshadweep, and senior representatives from various ministries participated in the meeting.

Amit Shah highlighted the government’s commitment to achieving 100% renewable energy generation in the islands. He emphasized using solar panels and windmills to replace diesel-based power, which has been the main source of electricity in these regions. This move aims to promote clean energy and reduce dependence on costly fossil fuels.

Additionally, for this mission, Shah directed the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to speed up the implementation of the ‘PM Surya Ghar’ scheme. This scheme involves installing solar panels in all households across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

The Home Minister also stressed the need to advance tourism and infrastructure development in these islands. He stated, “Even though these islands are far from Delhi, they are close to our hearts.”

During the meeting, various presentations were made about digital connectivity, air connectivity, and port development in the islands, showcasing efforts to improve overall infrastructure.

This initiative aligns with India’s renewable energy goals and brings hope for a sustainable future in the Andaman and Lakshadweep regions, promoting clean energy and reducing environmental impact.
