To boost Maharashtra’s textile industry, which is facing power problems, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has suggested using solar energy in spinning mills and textile units.
In a recent meeting with the textiles department, he asked for a joint committee of officials from both the textiles and energy departments to explore how renewable energy can be used in the sector.
“The textile industry completely depends on electricity. By installing rooftop solar panels and setting up solar farms on mill premises, we can reduce dependency on traditional power sources and ensure cost savings,” Fadnavis said.
Maharashtra’s textile sector, especially its spinning, dyeing, and finishing units, continues to face frequent disturbances due to unstable electricity supply. Using solar energy is expected to make things more stable and help the work run more smoothly.
The meeting was attended by Textiles Minister Sanjay Savkare, Legislative Council member Amrish Patel, and senior bureaucrats from concerned departments.
Fadnavis also asked departments like Social Justice, Tribal Development, and OBC Welfare to create common rules for giving financial help to cooperative spinning mills. He also suggested that these departments provide extra funds for the mills they look after.
He also suggested changes to the Integrated and Sustainable Textile Policy 2023–28. These include adding rules to recover money from cooperative spinning and power loom units, and quickly registering all power looms currently working in the state.
As part of the plans, Fadnavis looked at proposals to set up a Maharashtra State Textiles Development Corporation and combine the Textiles Commissioner’s office with the Silk Department to make management simpler and more efficient.
He agreed to increase the budget for cooperative spinning mills from ₹80.9 crore to ₹118 crore, saying it should match today’s market prices.
He also supported buying Red Cross Society land in Satara for silk work and asked for quick repairs on the Silk Directorate’s building in Pune, once the necessary approval (NOC) is given by the Maharashtra State Khadi Village Industries Board.
