Nigeria has launched a massive National Public Sector Solarization Initiative (NPSSI) worth ₦100 billion to bring solar power to schools, hospitals, security posts, and government offices nationwide.
The programme, led by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), starts with full government funding in its first phase and will later attract private investment to expand the project.
The officials aim to reduce diesel use, power important services with renewable energy, and reduce the public sector’s carbon footprint. The plan also aims to make more products locally.
By the end of 2024, Nigeria had around 385 MW of installed solar capacity and hopes to reach 500 MW by 2025.
Earlier this year, the government announced plans to ban solar panel imports, putting its trust in domestic production. This follows agreements for major projects, including a 1.2 GW solar assembly plant and plans for another 1 GW facility.
