India to Host Global Solar Research Hub, Called the ‘Silicon Valley of Solar’

The International Solar Alliance (ISA) is planning to set up a Global Capability Centre in India by the end of this year, which will act as a “Silicon Valley for solar,” according to Ashish Khanna, Director General of ISA.

As part of this initiative, ISA will also launch 17 centres of excellence in different countries. These centres will focus on testing, lab training, and supporting startups within universities modeled after IITs.

The Global Capability Centre in India will serve as the main hub connecting all these centres. In the future, the number of centres could rise to 50 countries, as many nations are seeking India’s expertise to strengthen their human resources in solar energy.

The ISA, formed by India and France in 2015 during the Paris Climate Summit, is headquartered in Gurugram and has about 100 member countries. Its main goal is to encourage the use of solar energy worldwide and help unlock $1 trillion in solar investments by 2030.

Recently, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy announced that 50% of India’s total power capacity now comes from non-fossil sources, with almost half coming from solar.

However, actual electricity supply data shows that coal still provides nearly 75% of power, while green energy contributes less than 30%.

India is planning to build stronger electricity links with other countries through the One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG) project, which will allow nations to share solar power with each other.

For example, a proposed 2,000-km undersea cable between India and the UAE could let both countries share solar electricity efficiently, since their peak usage hours differ.

With these steps, India is positioning itself as a global leader in solar innovation, research, and green energy collaboration.
