Delhi’s Munak Canal to Be Transformed with Solar Energy Project

by | Jul 9, 2025 | News | 0 comments

The Delhi government, led by Water Minister Pravesh Verma, has announced a plan to cover a 17 km section of the Munak canal with solar panels. It is the first project of this type in the capital.

The canal is an important source of water in the city, but due to leakage and evaporation, around 30% in one section and 5% in another is lost.

The Delhi Jal Board is currently conducting a feasibility study of the project. In the plan, a four-foot-high wall will be built on both sides of the canal to hold the solar panels.

Minister Verma said the project will not only save water and produce clean electricity but also make the area safer by stopping people from entering the canal. It will reduce cases of drowning and waste dumping also.

The project is inspired by a successful canal-top solar installation in Gujarat. The Delhi project also aims to bring similar benefits, which include conserving water, optimizing space, and producing renewable energy for the canal infrastructure and its surrounding areas.

The entire Munak Canal extends 102 km, with 85 km lying in Haryana and 17 km within Delhi. The project covers both the DSB and CLC sections. Delhi officials have also initiated talks with Haryana to ensure better coordination and effective management of the canal system.

A detailed project report and technical design are currently in progress. Complete work is expected to begin in the coming months.
