The Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, announced that India has become the third-largest producer of renewable energy in the world, on Global Wind Day 2025.
The country’s wind energy capacity has increased by 150% in the last years. It reaches a total of 51.5 GW. India is now the fourth-largest wind energy market globally. This achievement is part of the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative. The government’s focus is on renewable energy to power industries.
The Minister highlighted that this thing not only supports India’s climate goals but also helps build a strong and independent manufacturing base in the country. India is already exporting wind turbines and components to many countries.
India has set the target of 100 GW of wind power capacity by 2030. This 30 GW from offshore wind farms is located along the coast of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. For this, the government has approved a Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme, which is 7,453 crores, specifically for offshore wind energy projects.
The minister released a report titled “Ramping Up Local Manufacturing for Wind Turbines in India”, which shows how the country can support its wind energy supply chain.
Although there is progress, we still face some challenges. These are upgrading transmission infrastructure, maintaining grid stability, and reducing the cost of wind energy. But the government is also planning to modernize the power grid using AI-based forecasting, promote hybrid projects, and battery storage. The government is also organizing offshore wind auctions starting in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
India’s wind energy growth is a technological success and also a strategic step towards a greener future. Upcoming years, India is on track to become a global leader in renewable energy.
