The International Solar Alliance (ISA) andIIT Delhi have signed a new agreement. The aim is to expand solar energy training and academic cooperation across more than 120 member countries, mainly in the Global South.
The agreement was signed on February 25 in New Delhi by ISA Director General Ashish Khanna and IIT Delhi Director Prof. Rangan Banerjee.
This partnership builds on their existing collaboration. IIT Delhi’s Department of Energy Science and Engineering has already been running an M.Tech programme in Renewable Energy Technologies and Management for professionals from developing countries in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region.
In the last five years, over 100 students from 18 countries have completed the programme. Many of them are now working in solar energy projects and improving energy access in their home countries.
Under the new plan, the two institutions will expand their work in four major areas. They will launch a Train-the-Trainers programme to strengthen skills at ISA’s Solar Technology Application Resource Centres (STAR-Cs). They will also introduce new academic courses, including a one-year postgraduate diploma, a Master’s in Public Policy, and a Ph.D. track focused on solar energy.
The partnership will also focus on joint research in areas such as solar resource assessment, quality standards, and new solar technologies. Workshops and knowledge-sharing events will also be organised.
The new postgraduate diploma will be developed in collaboration with France’s Institut National de l’Énergie Solaire. In this course, modern topics like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain applications in distributed solar energy systems are included.
This move is expected to strengthen solar energy capacity and create skilled professionals across developing nations.
