Rajasthan Cabinet Approves Free Solar Power for 1 Crore Families

In a big decision, the Rajasthan Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, has approved a new plan to give one crore families 150 units of free electricity every month through solar power.

This plan, started under the PM Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme, aims to turn homes into energy producers instead of just users. It is the first scheme of this type in India that brings cheap solar power to millions of families in the state.

The scheme will benefit two categories of households. For nearly 27 lakh families whose average monthly electricity use is more than 150 units, free rooftop solar panels with a capacity of 1.1 kW will be installed on their homes.

Each plant will also receive financial assistance of ₹33,000 from the central government, ensuring that installation costs are covered. For households consuming less than 150 units a month, two separate models will be followed.

Those who have rooftops will get free solar plants installed directly on their houses by power distribution companies. For those who do not have rooftops, community solar plants will be set up, and the electricity generated will be credited to them through a virtual net metering system. This will ensure that they, too, receive 150 units of free power every month.

The cost of setting up these shared solar projects will be completely covered by DISCOMs, ensuring that even families without their own rooftops can benefit.

With this step, Rajasthan is moving closer to becoming a leader in solar energy, while also lowering electricity expenses for households.
